History
Opened in 1856 as William McEwan & Co, this brewery merged with William Youngers & Co. Ltd in 1931 to form Scottish Brewers Ltd. This in turn in 1960 merged with Newcastle Breweries to form Scottish & Newcastle PLC. Now under the ownership of Scottish Courage Limited, this plant now only brews keg beers mainly for the Scottish market. The brewery closed at the end of 2004.

Since the 1974 local government reorganisation there has been much controversy over many county boundaries.
