History
Originally opened in 1865 by George Lorimer it was acquired by Vaux Breweries Ltd in 1946. Following closure threats, it was purchased by a management buy-out team in May 1987. During the 1990s, two fires severely damaged the brewery but in both cases, a full restoration of this fine Victorian brewery was completed. The brewery was taken over by Scottish Courage Limited in 2004 however the Caledonian brands are still owned by the management of the original company. The brewery became part of Heineken UK Ltd in April 2008. The brewery closed in Summer 2022 with brewing contracted out to Belhaven Brewing Co Ltd.

Since the 1974 local government reorganisation there has been much controversy over many county boundaries.
