History
Brewing started at this site in 1840. Acquired by Bass Mitchell's & Butlers in 1960 and as such became part of Bass Brewers in 1961. Brewing continued at Springfield Brewery until 1991 when production of William Butler branded beers moved to William Stones Ltd and the brand ceased being brewed in the mid-1990s.

Since the 1974 local government reorganisation there has been much controversy over many county boundaries.
