History
Founded in 1749 in Leith they relocated in 1778 to Edinburgh. In 1931 they merged with Fountain Brewery to form Scottish Brewers Ltd. This in turn merged with Newcastle Breweries Ltd to form Scottish & Newcastle PLC in 1960. With the brands now under the ownership of Heineken UK Ltd, they are no longer brewed regularly.

Since the 1974 local government reorganisation there has been much controversy over many county boundaries.
